Watching the video Direct Support: Working with People with Intellectual Disabilities from the Texas Department of Aging and Disability Services can help job applicants decide if a direct support or habilitative support position working with people with intellectual and developmental disabilities is right for them. This video shows real direct support workers at work, describing their job duties and talking honestly about the rewards and challenges of their work.

All positions require the following upon offer of employment:

  • Educational credentials (HS diploma/GED from an accredited school; college transcript if a degree is a requirement of the position)
  • Criminal background and Department of Social Services Central Registry background check
  • 10-year driving record
  • Physical exam
  • 2-step tuberculosis test
  • Pre-employment drug screening
  • Work references

The Disabilities Board of Charleston County provides paid time off and extended illness time to full-time employees.

The Disabilities Board participates in a profit sharing retirement plan. This plan is offered to full-time and part-time employees who meet the eligibility requirements. Profit sharing means that the employee does not have to contribute to plan expenses. The agency will make the contributions.

RECRUITMENT INCENTIVE PROGRAM: HIRING BONUS

DBCC pays new full-time employees a $300 hiring incentive upon successful completion of their initial 6-month period of employment. Former DBCC employees are not eligible to receive the $300 incentive.
